SLS 1001 - Online Broward College - Winter 2015

Faculty Introduction • I have been teaching Student Life Skills (SLS) for First Year Experience students (FYE) for over 16 years. I have over 30 years of experience in colleges and universities. I have a BS in Public Administration from Florida International University, an M.Ed in Adult Education and a PhD in Higher Education Leadership from Florida Atlantic University. I believe that all students can learn! I am Full-Time Faculty and Coordinator/ Program Manager of SLS for FYE students at Broward College. I have experience teaching Student Success Strategies, Student Life Skills, and College Survival Skills; these three courses provide the foundation for college and life. I have three young adult sons who have or are attending college. In my spare time (you might ask when, I am an avid reader of biographies and history. I am excited about teaching you this session and am looking forward to meeting and working with each of you. See you online!

 Course Description • This course is tailored for First Time in College students and provides opportunities to learn about Broward Community College and higher education, acquire and practice learning strategies, explore personal learning styles, identify career options, and develop life-long skills for responsible citizenship.

Methods of Instruction • This is a 3-credit hour course. Normally, a 3-credit hour course would meet two or three times each week (during a 16 week term) for a total of 3 hours per week or 48 hours per term. This is a fully online class. In this class, we will engage in structured online activities which include graded discussions, graded assignments, a group project, and graded online quizzes. See the Course Schedule for a detailed description of online activities. Students are responsible for regularly reviewing the Course Schedule and completing all graded online assignments. It is very important for you to actively participate in this online class. If you stop attending do not submit assignments, or fail to take quizzes or tests prior to the withdrawal date, you will be administratively withdrawn from class and receive a W or, if it is your third attempt, an F. If you stop participating after the withdrawal date, you will receive an F, which will then be computed as an F in your GPA. To avoid this situation, you should remain an active learner in this class and always communicate extenuating circumstances to me. Ongoing communication with the instructor is critical to your course success. I will use completion of tests, assignments, and other class activities as indicators of your participation in order to satisfy this reporting requirement.

Learning Objectives • Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate the following competencies: Students shall be able to understand and apply key factors in self-motivation and self-management. • Students shall: be able to demonstrate familiarity with college organization, rules, regulations, support services and co-curricular programs. • Students shall be able to apply various learning strategies and critical thinking strategies to their college course work. • Students will be able to evaluate and develop their individual life management skills and values. • Students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the concept of Life / Career Planning. • Students shall: be able to demonstrate an understanding of the importance of developing an educational plan. • Students shall: be able to identify access, navigate and utilize necessary computer and web functions to help them achieve a successful academic and professional experience. http://www.broward.edu/outlines/SLS1001.pdf.
